What is a turtleneck?

A turtleneck is a sweater with an extra high collar that often ends just under the jawline. This type of sweater is called a turtleneck in the US and a Polo neck jumper in the UK. Wearing a turtleneck is a good way to keep your neck warm during cold days. The collar usually consists of a double-folded fabric, making it extra insulating. Nowadays, you see many mock turtleneck sweaters passing by. These look like turtlenecks but are not the same. The main difference between turtlenecks and mock turtleneck sweaters is that the collar of the turtleneck comes to the jawline, while the mock turtleneck collar comes to the bottom of the neck and is never folded.

The history of the turtleneck

The turtleneck is already an old garment, during the 15th century, these sweaters were already worn by knights who wore them under their chain mail. Besides knights, the nobility also wore turtlenecks. In the 19th century, the turtleneck was especially popular with workers, athletes, and sailors. In the 20th century, the turtleneck was mostly worn by intellectuals, artists, and bad guys in James Bond movies. Today, the turtleneck is mostly associated with college style. A famous turtleneck wearer was the owner and co-founder of Apple, Steve Jobs.
