What is an overshirt or shirt jacket?

An overshirt or shirt jacket is a sturdy shirt worn as a vest. It is a combination of several different garments. Thus, it is a vest, shirt, sports jacket, and jacket all in one. Overshirts are generally made of thicker fabrics such as corduroy, cotton, denim or flannel. Nowadays, comfortable stretch versions appear and sustainably produced overshirts made from recycled polyester, among other materials.

Where does the overshirt come from?

Overshirts were originally developed in the Alps for mountain climbers. Later they were added to the equipment of the U.S. Army. You can wear an overshirt just fine during the spring and fall. This is one of the reasons why they have continued to grow in popularity as streetwear since the 1990s. Today, people wear the overshirt in both informal and formal settings.

The materials of overshirts

Most shirt jackets are made of cotton. Cotton overshirts are very comfortable and not too hot when the sun is shining. Since cotton has high moisture absorption, it does not create sweat stains. Wool overshirts are perfect for colder days but are also suitable for fall and spring. In addition, you have sporty polyester variants that give your outfit a sleek look.
