What is lyocell?

Lyocell (also known by its brand name Tencel) is textile fiber made from wood pulp. As such, it bears many similarities to viscose, but the main difference is that it uses fewer harsh chemicals and is thus produced in a more environmentally friendly way. Lyocell is growing in popularity within menswear because of its durability, comfort and versatility.

What kind of fabric is lyocell?

Lyocell is a semi-synthetic fiber. It is made from cellulose from wood pulp of mainly eucalyptus or beech trees. This is treated with a solvent to spin fibers from it. Because the chemicals are reused within a closed system, it is a more environmentally friendly alternative to viscose. In addition, most of the wood is sourced from sustainably managed forests.

What are the benefits of lyocell?

Lyocell falls smoothly around your body and is even softer than viscose. Moreover, it is breathable and wicks away moisture efficiently so it dries quickly. This makes the fabric excellent to wear during hot summer days or in hot climates. In addition, the fabric has natural elasticity and is less prone to creasing than viscose. It is therefore not surprising that this fabric is often used for shirts and T-shirts.

What are the disadvantages of lyocell?

Despite all its advantages, Lycocell can eventually pill or fluff. It is further a shrink-sensitive fabric, making it wise not to wash it hotter than 30°C on the delicate wash cycle. Also, avoid direct exposure to sunlight to prevent color fading. Due to the chemical treatment the fabric undergoes, it is not an all-natural product.
